The Center for Disease Controll estimates that more than three hundred and eleven thousand gay men with AIDS have died since the epedemic began in the early 1980s.
In 1979, a small group of gay men began wearing the attire of nuns. Now an international organization, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is street performance, activist, and charity organization that has raised over $1million for various causes. That averages out to every hour a drag-nun raises $3.18 for charity.
“Genteel Hypocrisy” combines art, activism, and education into an interactive game. When searching for new ways to advocate for my community, I turned the Spanish bingo game Loteria into the queer education that I always wanted, that we always needed. Players will see visual icons, numerical information, and Spanish words combined together in open-ended ways to depict pivotal moments in history and contemporary issues facing the LGBT+ community.
LGBT+ topics have long been taboo, but recent legislation and public discourse show a need for expanded dialogue. Rather than condemning players for their ignorance, this project is intended to raise awareness to the rich history that is missing from our education system, dialogue that is missing from our news outlets, and the overall lack of engagement in LGBT+ topics.
